Sport and Active Leisure

What's happening locally

  • For prospective football coaches, Gloucestershire County FA runs a variety of courses (including coaching and first aid)

  • Active Gloucestershire encourages people to become physically active. The site has useful links and information about clubs/sporting activities, coaching courses, and details about employees' roles at Active Gloucestershire

  • Gloucestershire has some major sporting venues, the most famous of which is probably Cheltenham Racecourse, owned by Jockey Club Racecourses. Opportunities sometimes arise for grounds staff, event stewards and catering staff. NB trainers come with their own stable staff therefore there are no positions at Cheltenham.

  • Gloucestershire is also the base for the world famous Badminton Horse Trails (in May).

  • There is a range of private and council-owned sports and leisure venues in Gloucestershire. A large number are opened part time only, such as in the holiday periods, at weekends or evenings only.

  • Many national gym chains have branches in Gloucestershire, including Fitness First, LA Fitness and Virgin Active. Some of the council's centres are managed by trusts/charities on behalf of the council, such as Stroud's Stratford Park Leisure Centre (run by Everyone Active), which is currently being redeveloped. At present, Cotswold's 5 leisure centres are run by Cotswold District Council and staff are council employees, although this could change in the near future. Entry requirements will vary depending on the chain/who runs it.

  • Gloucestershire County Cricket Club have recently submitted plans for the redevelopment of its grounds in Bristol
