Hair and Beauty

What's happening locally

  • In Gloucestershire, around 1,100 people were employed in hairdressing and beauty in 2008 (the latest official figures), the majority in small salons of 10 or fewer employees

  • As in the rest of the UK, more women then men are employed, especially when it comes to part time work

  • According to Jobcentre statistics, an average of 5 or so hairdressing vacancies were advertised each month in 2011

  • For beauticians, the figures were much higher - around 20 a month

  • Large towns in Gloucestershire have the greatest concentration of hair and beauty salons so are therefore likely to have the most opportunities

  • In addition, the region has many spas, which are often based in country house hotels and which also offer a range of options

  • Some of the department stores in Gloucestershire, such as Debenhams and House of Fraser, have beauty consultant/sales staff - they are usually taken on by the beauty company itself (e.g. Elizabeth Arden), rather than the store
